Perspective
Profile of a Winner, when does
that struggle to succeed begin? With Nicolas it began
early in life with motorcross. At the age of
8 he was already championing in that arena and then
switched at the age of 14 to Personal Watercraft.
Introduced by a father's friend on a Kawasaki 550
stand-up, he went on to conquer the European front
in Marseilles, France. Eager to succeed in his newly
found playground, and influenced by all the top Americans,
he set his sights on competition in the States to
increase his level of competitive drive. If
you want to be the best, you need to ride with the
best. The domination begins....

The IJSBA World Finals have always
been an exclusive venue in the States. For
other countries to participate they have to produce
funding, sponsorships and the ability to travel and
transport equipment. Oftentimes there are language
barriers that come with the territory. Nicolas was
a prime example of that, not to mention the American
attitude towards cultural differences and behaviors.
Nicolas was misinterpreted as being an arrogant Frenchman;
time proved him to be not so. He is a pure warrior,
racing to win and as the years have passed that judgment
has fallen to the wayside. Fans find him quite down
to earth and open and more so since he learned the
English language. The language barrier was a painful
one for the communicative Rius, who did not have
a full understanding of what was being asked of him,
but there is no mistaking today what his intention
is all about--winning!
With 14 consecutive Number one
positions in European, World and National Championships,
Nicolas is a force to be reckoned with. 1999 has
proven to be a very demanding and brilliant year
for Rius. He created the Rius Factory Yamaha
Racing Team, an industry icon of team leadership
and abilities, with key support personnel such as
Team Mechanic, Lillian Beaumer from France. With
his ongoing professional relationship with Yamaha
Motors Corporation USA, the 1999 Pro Race season
will see Nicolas Rius return to the Pro stand up
division on a Yamaha Super Jet after a 3 year absence,
as well as the 785 Pro Runabout Class with Rius Factory
Yamaha Racing Team pushing the envelope.

Back in 1995, Nicolas moved
to the United States to further succeed at maintaining
a progressive competitive edge against the top
racers in the field. He currently resides
in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. A decade of Watercraft
racing has passed. In 1999, his goals at
the age of 25 have not wavered from his first race;
he maintains close contacts in his homeland France
where he remains a National hero, recently winning
the Indoor Bercy Stadium Race on his hometown turf
on April 3. Nicolas is an epic racer, one of the
few in our industry to cross multiple barriers,
from cultural, to continental; he remains a winner.
Earning the nickname 'The Fighter', was
a symbolic revelation. Nicolas has had to overcome
many obstacles to find his success; no other rider
is more committed in their training program or
dedication to the sport.

as one of Yamaha's top athletes in 1998 who instructed
Yamaha racers on the fine points of his trade at
the Yamaha Performance Race Training School, and
will once again prior to World Finals be instructing
the future hopefuls at the next training school.
